Adaptative responses of E-coli to marine environmental stresses. a modelling approach based on viability and dormancy concepts ArchiMer
Martin, Y; Troussellier, Marc; Bonnefont, Jl.
In an attempt to synthesize conceptual and experimental information on the behaviour of enteric bacteria in seawater, a mathematical model has been developed. This model is based on changes in intracellular metabolisable components depending an physiological responses of the cell when subjected to nutrient starvation, salinity stress and solar radiation. Following a strategy which takes into account short- and mid-term physiological adaptation and reversal processes, the cells can develop in different states: culturable (B-1), viable and definitively nonculturable (B-2), and reversibly dormant (B-3) cells. Model parameters were deduced either from original microcosm experiments, from literature data or calibration procedures. Validation of the model was...

Biodegradation du petrole en mer. Influence de l'apport d'azote et de phosphore sous forme minerale ArchiMer
Lepetit, J; Guiot, J; Martin, Y; Tagger, S.
To exploit the presence in the sea of microorganisms capable of degrading petroleum products a mineral fertilizer, containing immediatly assimilable nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, was used to increase the microbial population and therefore, the degradation potential of treated polluted waters. The fertilizer supply caused an increase in heterotrophic and hydrocarbon-splitting bacteria and an increase in the phytoplanktonic biomass. The latter is characterized by an increase in a few selected species; it constitutes an important supply of organic substances, and it is responsible for increasing the dissolved oxygen which is essential for petroleum oxidation. Supplying the fertilizer results in an increase in the treated water degradation potential and a...

Etude experimentale de la disparition de coliformes fecaux d'un effluent urb ain en milieu marin ArchiMer
Bonnefont, J; Lelong, P; Martin, Y.
The authors studied survival of faecal coliform (decrease rate + T90) in experimental devices (closed or continuous flow systems) using various dilutions of urban sewage in sea-water. Survival appears to be high (T90 between 12 to 81 h). Dilution level of sewage and organic matter contents seems to be important to explain the decrease of faecal coliforms observed in these experiments.

Interactions entre les bacteries et les algues dans une culture continue de phytoplancton naturel soumise aux conditions exterieures ArchiMer
Gauthier, M; Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Breittmayer, V.
During an experimental continuous culture of natural marine phytoplankton in environmental conditions, microbial and biochemical tests performed to study production of antibacterial and antialgal substances by unicellular algae. Some parameters were further monitored to characterize bacteria and phytoplankton growth. The presence of inhibitors of algal origin was studied both in the water and in the algal biomass at different phases of the culture, through bioassays performed with bacteria (marine pseudomonads and vibrios, and telluric strains) and several algal strains. Interpretation of the results is difficult. Two successive phases appeared during the growth of phytoplankton, with two different algal populations. The unsteady population of phase I was...

Models of relations between bacteria and plankton, and regeneration processes in marine planktonic ecosystem. ArchiMer
Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Cauchi, B.
In order to study bacteria-plankton relationships, experimental and mathematical models were used to stimulate biological processes implicated in plankton ecosystems and to analyze community relationships. The model components are phytoplankton, zooplankton, autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, ciliates, nutrients, organic matter and phytoplankton antibiotics. This study shows the importance of some factors affecting bacteria communities dynamics and the bacterial activity in mineralization process. Bacterial populations seem to be controlled essentially by the concentration and chemical composition of organic substrates. Antibiosis and predation show a lesser importance on changes in bacteria communities.
